The Monastery church of Zlata Koruna shelters a well preserved Baroque organ from 1698-1699. It was built by Abraham Starck z Lokte (1659-1709). The organ has an electric blower engine, but can also be controlled with the feet. During the recordings they used the 'foot blower', because the electric engine gives too much background noise. The church has good acoustics with nice long reverb.
Because of the typically baroque disposition (no reeds, no strings), the organ is not suitable for romantic music. In 1941 they had the same opinion during a restoration. Organ Builder Hrubyr has replaced both of Quinten of Hauptwerk and the Quint and Octave2 of Ruck Positiv by romantic strings. In 1984, she turned it back, this was possible because the original pipes were properly stored.
The size of the manuals is four octaves C1-C5, the pedal is called a 'short octave' of C1-a2. In the sample set, you can also choose the 'Extended Version' with a 'normal' pedal of C1-D3 and a manual compass of C1-F5.
It is a very realistic sample set:
  • The recordings are clear and detailed, the reverb is a true-to-life rendering.
  • There is a decent 'Spuck' (the sound of pressing and releasing a key), I personally find that quite beautiful.
  • The organ blower sounds in the background. You can also turn this off on the Windcontrol page.
  • There is the sound of pulling and pushing back a stop.
  • The control screen looks very real.
  • There is a 'Zlata Koruna' temperament included.
Especially with headphones the good stereo balance of this organ can be heard, you hear the blowing Principal8 sound from left to right. The Flutes sounds mild. The BordunFlet8 is very soft, I prefer the Copula8 of the Ruck Positiv. With the Salicional4, you can supplement the Principal8 in a soft way. The combination BordunFlet8 and Salicional4 can be used as an accompaniment to a 'solo registration' on the Ruck Positiv. The whole sesquialtera is fairly sharp, but the Tierce and Quint can also be used separately. Graphically, this is funny resolved: The button consists of two parts. On both keyboards is a 8/4/2 plenum possible, on the Hauptwerk what sounds fiercer than the Ruck Positiv.
There are five tabs available to operate the sample set:
  • Console - The main screen. Very nice and realistic, but also practical: Clearly readable, the large buttons are also well suited for a touch screen. Very unfortunate that the 'couples' and 'combination stops' are only available on the 'Left Tab'. Many (I think: most) Hauptwerk users do not have two touch screens available and use mainly the console tab.
  • Left - If you have two touch screens, this is the control screen for the left side. This screen contains also the buttons for the 14 combination stops. Furthermore the couplers: II-I, I-P, II-P, Bass coupler.
  • Right - If you have two touch screens, this is the control screen for the right side.
  • Belows - As with other Sonus Paradisi sample sets, the wind model is made visual, furthermore the wind pressure can be regulated with adjustments of the valves. This nice toy can only be used with Hauptwerk Advanced and outside the U.S. (because of a patent).
  • Windcontrol - Here you can use the button 'Gebluse' to switch the sound of the blower on and off, very handy. I don't know the meaning and effect of the button 'Klappen'.
  • Voicing - To adjust the brightness of each stop (works also for Hauptwerk Basic). When you put the slider higher, the tone becomes sharper, when you put the slider lower, the tone becomes darker. I don't use that feature because I want a result that is as much realistic as possible.
The information in menu 'Organ / Organ information' is not quite up to date, it contains pictures of the old (2003) version 1 sample set of this organ.
This sample set is available in a Wet version (with reverb) and a Dry version (recorded nearby without reverb).
This sample set has no major requirements for the computer: for the Wet-version is a computer with 4 GB of memory sufficient (2664 MB with standard memory reduction settings), still less with 'single loops'. For the Dry-version a computer with 2 GB is enough when you load the samples in 16-bit.
Conclusion: It is a pretty typical baroque sample set with beautiful reverb for an average price (over E 9.50 per stop).
